Three weeks after the January 2010 Haiti earthquake, Laura Silsby was arrested at the Haitian border with 33 children and zero documentation. Charged with kidnapping and criminal association. Prosecutors said she knew she didn't have authorization. Her own lawyer told the court the other nine missionaries "knew absolutely nothing — Laura wanted to leave with children."
It was not her first attempt. Haitian police had already stopped Silsby trying to take 40 children across the border in a separate incident and turned her back with no charges.
None of the 33 children were orphans. All had at least one living parent. Some parents said they were told the children were going to a school where they could visit them. Silsby had told Haitian authorities they were orphans.
Bill Clinton was appointed UN Special Envoy to Haiti. According to the Harvard Human Rights Journal, one of his first acts in that role was to broker the release of all nine other missionaries. The kidnapping charges against Silsby were reduced to "arranging irregular travel." She was convicted of that lesser charge and sentenced to time already served — walking free in May 2010 after about four months in jail.
Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State. Her deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin tracked the case closely, forwarding regular updates to Hillary and other State Department officials — confirmed via WikiLeaks email archive. It is highly unusual for the Secretary of State's office to be personally involved in the arrest of Americans abroad. State Department policy explicitly discourages it.
Jorge Torres-Puello, the lawyer appointed to represent Silsby, was later arrested as an international fugitive wanted in the United States, El Salvador, and Costa Rica for running a trafficking ring involving women and minors from Central America and Haiti.
Where is Laura Silsby now? She changed her name to Laura Gayler and became Vice President of Marketing at AlertSense — a company that operates AMBER Alert systems for missing children.

Attempt to take 33 children with no documentation across an international border. Get caught. Get caught again. Have your own lawyer say you were the one who wanted the children. Have the children's parents say they were lied to. You would face federal kidnapping charges in two countries. You would not be running a child safety alert system.
In 2008, the major American banks collapsed the global financial system through a combination of mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and deliberate misrepresentation of risk to investors and regulators. The result: $10 trillion in household wealth wiped out. 8 million jobs lost. Millions of families lost their homes.
The executives responsible — Richard Fuld of Lehman Brothers, Jimmy Cayne of Bear Stearns, Stan O'Neal of Merrill Lynch, Chuck Prince of Citigroup — walked away with their fortunes intact.
The banks were bailed out with taxpayer money. The executives kept their bonuses. Some institutions paid fines — which they had budgeted for as a cost of doing business. Angelo Mozilo of Countrywide faced SEC civil charges and settled out of court. Two Bear Stearns fund managers were charged with fraud and found not guilty.
One banker went to prison for the entire 2008 financial crisis. One. Kareem Serageldin of Credit Suisse, sentenced to 30 months for hiding losses in a trading book. That's it.
A Wharton expert put it plainly: "A banker looks around and says, 'I got paid huge bonuses, we destroyed the financial system and nobody went to prison, nobody really paid a fine, nobody really had any reputational costs. Why shouldn't I just do that again?'"
Federal Judge Jed Rakoff, one of the most respected jurists in the country, wrote in the New York Review of Books that the failure to prosecute was a systemic decision — not a failure of evidence. The DOJ chose to prosecute companies instead of individuals, which meant no one actually went to prison for decisions they personally made.
Commit fraud that destroys the savings of millions of families. Lose your employer's investors $10 billion through deliberate misrepresentation. You are not a bank. You do not have a team of lawyers on retainer. You go to prison.
As director of NIAID and the face of America's COVID-19 response, Fauci oversaw pandemic policies that shut down schools, closed small businesses, mandated masks, and pushed vaccine mandates that affected every American. He publicly said the six-foot social distancing rule was based on science. In closed-door congressional testimony, he admitted it "sort of just appeared" with no data behind it.
On July 29, 2026, Fauci appeared before the Senate Homeland Security Committee. He invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times, refusing to answer questions about pandemic decisions, COVID origins, and gain-of-function research funding.
Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul released the first batch of texts from Fauci's government phone — 34,000 messages and 522 voicemails. Among them: Fauci privately acknowledged to CDC Director Walensky that the COVID vaccine could theoretically cause miscarriage in the first trimester due to cytokine storm and fever after the second dose. Walensky replied: "Definitely a good point, esp after dose two."
Publicly, pregnant women were told the vaccine was safe. Privately, the government's own top officials were discussing potential risks to first-trimester pregnancies.
Biden's preemptive pardon: On his final day in office, President Biden issued broad preemptive pardons for family members and top officials — including Fauci — covering conduct during the pandemic. The pardon cannot cover future crimes. It covers whatever happened before it was issued.
The contempt vote: The Senate committee voted 8-5 along party lines to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify. Rand Paul then admitted: "All I can do is recommend the prosecution. I can't initiate prosecution."
State AG investigations: The attorneys general of Florida, Louisiana, and West Virginia subpoenaed Fauci after his refusal to testify, investigating potential state offenses not covered by Biden's federal pardon.
Withhold known health risks from millions of Americans making medical decisions. Invoke the Fifth Amendment 111 times when asked about your decisions. Your employer cannot give you a retroactive pardon for actions that harmed people. You face the consequences.
$9 billion stolen from federal programs meant to feed children, house disabled people, and provide healthcare to vulnerable Minnesotans. The June 2026 House Oversight final report — over 200 pages, titled "The Cost of Doing Nothing" — found that Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison knew about credible, systemic fraud as early as spring 2019, had the legal authority to stop it, and did nothing.
State employees who raised concerns were retaliated against. Data was deleted. Records were withheld. The administration, according to the report, "chose to protect the system rather than protect the taxpayer."
Ellison was caught on audio at a private 2021 meeting with Somali community leaders — several of whom were later convicted of fraud — saying "Let's go fight these people" when asked to help against fraud investigators, shortly before receiving $10,000 in campaign donations from individuals later charged.
Steal $9 billion from disabled people and children's food programs. Cover it up for five years. Retaliate against anyone who tried to stop it. You are not a governor. You do not get a letter and a pension.
More than half of Trump's pardons in his second term's first year went to business executives or politicians convicted of financial crimes — money laundering, bank fraud, wire fraud. An NBC News analysis found this was an unusually high concentration compared to prior administrations.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ), Binance founder: Pleaded guilty to enabling money laundering on his crypto platform. Binance itself paid a record $4.3 billion fine. CZ was sentenced to four months in prison. Pardoned. Senators noted that Binance had financially supported Trump's World Liberty Financial crypto venture before the pardon.
Joseph Schwartz, nursing home CEO: Pleaded guilty to a $38 million tax fraud scheme. The Washington Post reported he paid $960,000 to lobbyists to secure a presidential pardon. He got the pardon. He is now serving time in Arkansas on similar state charges not covered by the federal pardon.
Biden's preemptive pardons, final day in office: Biden pardoned Fauci, members of his own family, military leaders on the Joint Chiefs, and members of Congress who investigated January 6th — before any of them had been charged with anything. Preemptive pardons for crimes not yet charged. The presidential pardon power, with no limits.
Both parties. Same machine. The pardon power exists in every administration. It has always worked this way. If you know the right people, have the right connections, and can pay the right lawyers — the door to accountability has an exit.
Launder money for international traffickers and sanctioned regimes. Pay a $4.3 billion fine. Go to prison for four months. You do not have $960,000 for lobbyists. You do not have access to the people who can make a phone call. You serve your sentence.
